About Bake Me Happy
Hello - I'm Joy
After working in catering and as a primary school teacher (and then falling out of love with the school system!) I started a kids cookery company in 2005 (Munchkins Kids Cooking) offering healthy eating workshops, foodie assemblies, staff training and parents courses on cooking and nutrition in Primary and Secondary Schools across London, as well as cookery after schools club, holiday courses and parties for kids of all ages. I also worked on the Cbeebies 'I Can Cook' programme and as a food consultant for other BBC productions.
I then opened Blackheath Cooks - a popular local cookery school and cookshop - in SE London in 2010. We offered cookery classes, parties and events for adults and children. I worked with a brilliant team of chefs and teachers who delivered a wide range of courses, and collaborated with the local butcher, fishmonger, wine merchants and Riverford organic vegetables to offer supper clubs and themed workshops. I absolutely loved the business but sold it in 2014 when my twins were born (because with 3 children under the age of 2, work had to go on the back burner for a while!)
We moved to Kent in 2015 and installed a new kitchen to be able to offer small group cookery classes at home. I spent 4 years building up my workshops alongside schools work, and small events catering. I love cooking with people and sharing my passion and enthusiasm for creating great food from scratch. And I believe that the best way to increase your kitchen confidence and learn new skills is by getting stuck in, and asking as many questions as you like (preferably with a glass of wine to hand!)
The pandemic threw a bit of a curveball, and I had to stop running workshops. So I switched focus and during 2020 found myself busier than ever with baking orders, and expanded into offering postal bakes.
I really missed teaching workshops and was sure that I’d be starting them again as soon as restrictions were lifted….. but, like many people, my focus and priorities have changed over the past year. I’m now Home Educating my 3 children (now aged 7, 7 and 8) and so, I’ve decided that for the moment I’m not going to return to running my baking and cooking workshops. I’m learning the truth of that old adage that our resources of time and energy are finite, so when you say ‘Yes’ to one thing, you’re saying ‘No’ to something else. And I’ve realised in this season of my life that I want to be saying a wholehearted ‘Yes’ to the home-schooling adventure that I’m on with my children…...which means saying ‘No’ to running workshops for the time being.
I'm still working - just in a way that allows me to better prioritise the needs of my family! Cakes, bakes and Afternoon Teas are all still available and can be ordered here.
Thankyou so much to everyone who has continued to support my little business on it's ever-evolving journey.....I really do appreciate it!
